'Shallow' - Brothertiger - [Song Review]
Unlike the title suggests, this recent single from Brothertiger plunges you into the deep with his most recent poly-symphonic dreamscape. Shallow transports you to the 1980’s, cutting through the breakers on a catamaran, in a way that yacht rock could only dream of doing. Crisp beats, oscillating synthesizers and ambient vocals envelop you with such intentional care and precision.
Shallow celebrates the freedom and joy that can come from losing yourself, even for a moment, in the beautiful unpredictability in this sea of existence. No care or fear of going overboard, but almost a deep calling to the waters. The juxtaposition of calm depths and tumultuous waves to the peace and chaos they are conveying speaks to the reality of life.
There are no certainty in these lyrics, which makes the last line of the chorus so striking with its certainty: “I’m right on target.” Maybe the certainty is that the sea is unpredictable. Like the great Roman historian Pliny the Elder once said, “In these matters, the only certainty is that nothing is certain.” Maybe Brothertiger is out to teach us an important history lesson… or maybe he just wanted to write one of my favorite songs of the year so far… but who’s to say.
