'I'm Yours' - Tommy Genesis - [Song Review]
Tommy Genesis has been in the musical realm for quite a while with over 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify with her oldest work dating back to 2015. Her last full length album appropriately entitled, Tommy Genesis, came out last year. Now, she has hit us again with her most recent single ‘I’m Yours’.
‘I’m Yours’ by Tommy Genesis captures those several moments in any interaction with someone you desire when you want them to be entirely your own. Even if you don’t belong to the one you want to belong to, there is always that possibility that you might be special or be the exception. There is always the hope that you will get chosen by that person. Genesis, rather than waiting around to get chosen by the one she wants, emphasizes that she in fact belongs to who she wants to belong to. The mere idea of talking to someone is reason enough to belong to that person. That’s really all it takes, right?
Genesis jumps into the track with a sort of musical confidence. Musically and lyrically, this song is straight to the point and incredibly honest. There is nothing out of the blue or chaotic about the track. The rhythm knows what it is doing and so does Tommy Genesis. She uses repetitive lyrics to stress what she feels is important with slight changes in one or two words to throw off the listener. The chorus repeats, “I’m yours when you talk to me, do me like you know I’m yours”.
We want to belong to someone. We want to feel chosen and special in any way that we possibly can. Tommy sings of someone who has the ability to wrap her up completely with something as simple as words and proximity. The moment when the person we’ve spent all day thinking about decides speak to us, is the moment when we feel at complete ease. When it feels right, it probably still isn’t right, but let Tommy Genesis chase that feeling with you and give yourself over to whoever it is you spend your days and nights dwelling on. Just for a little bit at least…
